Grand Canyon National Park - Monument Valley - Page/Lake Powell

 Monday 24th June 2013
Sunrise walk & breakfast this morning at the Grand Canyon with a 3.30am get up and 4.30am start. Early start this morning understatement. Met guide at 4.30am with our suit cases. Not sure of the temperature this morning but it is cold, should have warn the thicker jackets. Approx a 20 min walk thought the forest to the Canyon Rim. A number of viewing spots we choose one without too many tress to block the view. Finally about 5.20am the sun starts to peak over the ridge. Great view as the walls of the Canyon start to light up. Walked back along the rim admiring the view along the way to the Arizona Room at one end of the Bright Angel Lodge by 6am for our Buffet breakfast. Cereal, fruit, Juice, eggs, bacon and sausage. We finished with a coffee need all the caffeine we can get!
Sunrise over Grand Canyon

Then from there we head to the airport for those of us doing the flights today. We are in a Cessna with 9 passengers and the pilot, we all had window seats which was great. We flew over the Grand Canyon, Monument Valley landing there after a very bumpy ride, which has to do with the strong winds and flighing over the Canyon, glad we took tablets that's for sure.

Happy faces before the flight!

Landing at Monument Valley

We did a ground tour around the Valley, tours are operated by the Native Indians - The Navajo tribe, very bumpy and dusty ride in the back of an open truck, much like the ones used in Arkaroola for the Ridge Top tours. Deb purchased some jewelry from the local native women who are set up under tents at the photo stops.

Great shot Pete! Reminds you of the movies.

3 Sisters!

Very windy ride back to the plane! Just love the hair!

Our small plane!
Back on the plane flight to Page, flying over Lake Powell, it is a huge Lake and spans 119 miles, Glen Canyon Dam Wall - luckily the scenery was good as both flights were extremely bumpy as it was a windy day.  We sat one on each side of the plane so have great photo's of both sides. So glad we took tablets each flight was 45 mins. We were all really glad to be back on the ground. Shuttle bus from the airport to the hotel arriving at the hotel at 12.30pm.

Approaching the Air Strip in Page
Walked down the road to the VIC and asked about places to eat. Took local advise and had a lovely lunch at the Ranch House Grill with 3 of the other passengers. We got into our room at 3ish and I had a catch up sleep. Headed out about 4ish to find some supplies for breakfast tomorrow morning. Back to the hotel and the  bus has arrived at 5.30pm little late due to road works. Other passengers have had a long day on th bus, good day for us to choose to do a flight.

Page near Lake Powell tonight we are in a Best Western nice hotel but no Restaurant or even a bar. A bit disappointing as it would have been nice to spend some time relaxing at the bar. After some research on the web we had dinner at Ken's Old West - Western style Steakhouse behind the hotel car park. We both had steak and it was a good meal for the price. Walked back to our room and early night 10pm bed.
