Carlo Creek to Fairbanks

Wednesday 12th June 2013
Alarms at 7am and breakfast in our cabin again this morning. All packed and on our way by 8.45am, Bright blue clear skies this morning 55F. Quick stop at Mc Kinley Creek Cafe for Cinnamon Buns which we have seen each night. Into Denali NP Visitor Centre. Betty headed off on a Ranger guided walk to Horseshoe Lake leaving at 10am. P,D & G off to see about a Helicopter flightseeing trip given the beautiful clear skies today. Nothing  available til 4pm this arvo would have been $345 each, but we can't wait til then, so that's a easy way to save $345 each. Back into DNP to try and catch up to Betty and the Ranger lead group. We took a quick hike down to the Horseshoe Lake trail without finding them. We walked to the bottom near the Lakes edge to be swamped by swarms of large mozzies! Bug spray on all around and headed back up the trail. Reached the top again with finding the group, so walked back to the VIC to wait for Betty to return. Well earnt coffees around. Betty's group returned about 3/4 quarters of an hour later. it seems we did take the express walk to the lake and back again.

Headed into DNP at 12.10pm on the same road as the bus went yesterday, and we were rewarded with good clear views of Mt Mc Kinley in the distance, less that 15% of people who come to see Mt Mc Kinley actually get to see it, so how lucky are we?  Drove a little further down the road almost to Savage River to see Caribou and Grizzly with her Cub feeding on the grass. Eaten alive by mozzies after a while, so we turned around at Savage River just before the gravel road begins. Lunch at Denali Village Subway. Fuel $4.26.9 per gall 18.478 Gal $78.88 on the road again at 2.50pm, roadworks for 11 miles 71F arrived in Fairbanks at 5.15pm. Wedgwood Resort, our first apartment had only 1 bedroom with 2 queen beds so called the office and moved us to a 2 Bedroom apartment No.29 Harding building. We have a full size kitchen, living area and dinning table. All settled and off to dinner ar Denny's for a light dinner, all meals came with soup and hugh meals. Onto Visitor centre fantastic displays about the changing seasons in Alaska. Antler arch and home by 9.15pm. Make our plans for tomorrow and bed at 11pm.
