Fairbanks to Dawson City

Thursday 14th June 2013
Alarms set for 6.45am this morning as we have a long drive ahead of us to Dawson City along the "Top Of the World Highway". Breakfast, bags packed checked out and on the road at 8.25am. Crossed the Tanana River and saw the Trans Alaskan Pipeline on the separate bridge alongside us.

Trans Alaskan Pipeline Facts
4ft wide and 800 miles long and runs from Prudhoe Bay on the Artic Ocean down to Valdez on Prince William Sound the northern most year round icy free port in Alaska on the Gulf of Alaska. It spands 500 odd waterways and 3 mountain ranges transporting 600,000 barrels of crude oil per day, 12% of USA domestic production. 3 years in construction at a cost of $8Billion and surrounded by controversy. It runs underground for 380 miles and the rest of the way it is mounted above ground as the heat of the oil in the pipeline would melt the permafrost.

Our first stop today was at Delta Junction 10.25am photos of the end of the Alaska Highway or in our case the start of our journey on the Alaska Highway.

Change of drivers Pete at the wheel for the next couple of hours. Lovely scenery along the way snow capped Alaskan Range in the distance. Stopped at Tok for lunch and fuel 17.23Gal 4.299cents per gal total of $74. Geoff driving again and we turn onto the Main Highway heading towards Chicken at the 66 mile mark. 51 miles in dirt/gravel road and raining temp down to 54F. Reached Chicken at   had a look around they have the Chicken Stock Music Festival so the road is busy and the small town even busier with RV's and campers arriving for the weekend.

Change of drivers and onward towards Dawson City, dirt road continues we crossed the border into the Yukon at 4.25pm this is also the timeline so it is now 5.25pm that hour went quickly. Change drivers again at 5pm and arrived at West Dawson Ferry across the Yukon river at 7.15pm.
